Last fall we were hired to photograph a local company that offers guided sunset kayaking tours. My first thought was – all my gear…in a kayak? Gulp. But what the heck it sounds like fun – lets DO THIS! Let me just say – it was AMAZING!
Bayou Adventures is more than a swamp tour. First their store is a Louisiana fisherman’s dream! You can get your fishing licenses, maps, boating supplies; as well as live bait and tackle. While I can neither confirm nor deny, they boast of having live bait for every species of fish in the area.
On the day of my sunset tour, there was a Parish Brewing beer tasting event going on. I should mention here that they have a huge variety of craft brews! So even if you aren’t looking to kayak or fish, but enjoy a good craft beer, I’d highly recommend stopping in to see what their selection might have.
After the beer tasting was finished, we had a brief safety and tour description about what to expect while out on our kayaks. Here is where I first heard of “amphibious glitter.” I wont give that away, you really should take the sunset tour to learn about it in person!
As we started out on our bayou adventure, all I had on my mind was “I hope I don’t flip into the water” as I placed my camera gear on the kayak. Pretty sure my stomach did a few flips as I was launched into the dark bayou water.
However my worries were quickly forgotten as I got to work shooting and enjoying the beauty Louisiana has to offer. Now I’ve been out on boats in the bayou a million times before…but there is something to be said about going out on a kayak, with no engine sounds and limited materials between you and nature (and the water lol).
As we slowly glided across the water towards the lake, the sun continued to sink into the horizon, at times peaking out from behind a cloud or between tree branches. While we continued our trek, the other kayakers’ were broken into their different groups; some going ahead, while other went at a more leisurely pace.
It took a moment when we reached the opening of the bayou that emptied into the lake, before I realized we were there, from being on a narrow path, to seeing the vast lake water that seemed to continue on forever.
It was here that we would watch the suns final movements that day; over the lake water, with the Causeway barely noticeable above the horizon. A divider of what was lake and what was sky.
Kayakers mingled and enjoyed each other’s company. Some broke off to quietly watch the sunset with their significant others. Most of us got out of our kayaks to enjoy the coolness of the water on that warm October day and there even was a cleared little beach like area some went ashore on.
Definitely one of the best business sessions I’ve ever done! I highly recommend Bayou Adventure! Their kayaks are up for rental any time. Please head on over to Bayou Adventure to see all the genuine Louisiana things they have to offer. Don’t forget to follow their facebook page so you can keep up with other events they have as well as see the beautiful images taken of their sunset tours!
